On the afternoon of July 20, the self-assessment expert evaluation meeting of degree conferring institutions of journalism and communication discipline held in Renmin University of China was held in Mingde Building. The expert group listened to the self-assessment report of the School of Journalism and Communication, exchanged views with representatives of teachers and students, and gave feedback.

The experts included Hu Zhengrong (chief editor of China Education Television), Zhang Taofu (executive director of School of Journalism, Fudan University), Zhang Kun (professor of School of Journalism and Information Communication, Huazhong University of Science and Technology), Qiang Yuexin (dean of School of Journalism and Communication, Wuhan University), Cheng Manli (professor of School of Journalism and communication, Peking University), Jiang Bo (senior editor of Economic Daily) and Jin Lei (senior editor of China National Radio).

And the participants included An Zhiwei (director of Graduate School’s Academic Degree Office of Renmin University of China), Ma Shengli (director of the professional degree office), Hu Baijing (executive director of the School of Journalism and Communication), Zhou Yong, (secretary of the Party committee), vice secretary of the Party committee Zhang Huifeng, Wang Runze and Zhao Yunze, deputy Party secretary Meng bin and Han Xiaoning, teacher representatives Yang Baojun, Zhou Weihua, Gao Guiwu, Xu Xiangdong and Zhang Di, and student representatives Zhou Xiaohui, Ni Lerong, Gao Han and Wang Min.

The evaluation meeting was presided over by Hu Baijing, executive director of School of Journalism and Communication. He hoped that all experts would put forward valuable opinions and suggestions on the construction of journalism and communication discipline of Renmin University, and introduced the idea of "internal reconstruction and external expansion" of the School and the overall situation of the systematic integration and innovation focusing on talent training.

Zhou Yong, Secretary of the Party committee of the School, made a self-assessment report on behalf of degree conferring institutions of journalism and communication discipline of Renmin University of China, focusing on the development history, discipline composition, construction objectives, teaching staff, scientific research and personnel training. In addition, he put forward the existing problems and improvement plans.

After listening to the report, the evaluation expert group exchanged views with teachers and students on challenges, research direction, journalism education mode, personnel training and other aspects of journalism and communication discipline construction. The expert group fully affirmed the experience and achievements of Journalism and communication discipline construction in Renmin University of China, and put forward opinions and suggestions on the existing problems and future development.

Hu Zhengrong, chief editor of China Education Television, believed that School of Journalism and Communication of Renmin University of China had always played a leading role in the discipline of journalism and communication in China. The School should consider major issues such as the top-level design of journalism and communication discipline, and some attempts and explorations made at present are effective. He said that the construction of disciplines should highlight representative scholars, achievements and advantageous disciplines. At the same time, problems at various levels such as the industry and academic field, the discipline itself and interdisciplinary, the discipline foundation and frontier, domestic and international issues still need to be explored.

Zhang Taofu, executive director of the School of Journalism of Fudan University, said that School of Journalism and Communication of Renmin University of China had a profound historical background and had played an exemplary role in the construction of journalism and communication discipline in the new era. At present, some problems that School of Journalism and Communication of Renmin University of China is facing in the development and is trying to solve are also existing the whole journalism and communication discipline, which need to be discussed together. He put forward some suggestions on establishing characteristics, further clarifying the direction of talents training and dealing with the relationship between academic research and talent training.

Zhang Kun, a professor of Journalism and Information Communication School of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, affirmed the strengthening of the construction of teaching staff and the promotion of the construction of teaching platform. He proposed that facing with the current social transformation and media reform, the School should fully took the leading role in the innovation of education mode of journalism and communication. In addition, he exchanged views with the school leaders on how to realize the growth and development of the teachers introduced by the industry.

Qiang Yuexin, Dean of the School of Journalism and communication of Wuhan University, put forward some suggestions on the cultivation of graduate level talents. He believed that the professional direction and research characteristics should be combined, and he hoped to give full play to the role of Research Center of Journalism and Social Development of Renmin University of China as an essential research base. He also exchanged views with the school leaders on the construction of the teaching staff and how to keep me as the main body in interdisciplinary research.

Cheng Manli, a professor at the School of Journalism and Communication of Peking University, said that the School of Journalism and Communication of Renmin University of China had both tradition and innovation in discipline construction, curriculum, talents training and research direction. In recent years, the internationalization level of the school had also improved significantly. She suggested that the discipline of journalism and communication in Renmin University of China should present the role of leadership in the research direction, and should have more discourse power and further play a role in the coordination, integration and opening of teaching research and academic research resources.

Jiang Bo, senior editor of Economic Daily, put forward opinions and suggestions on talent cultivation. He said that employers generally evaluated the graduates of School of Journalism and Communication of Renmin University of China as high comprehensive quality and with high satisfaction. For the current and future training of journalism and communication talents, it was necessary to further understand the importance of general education and basic education, and coordinate the relationship between general education and professional one.

Jin Lei, senior editor of China National Radio, said that at present, it was necessary to further strengthen the professional quality, innovative consciousness and the ability of combining theory with practice for students majoring in journalism and communication. In terms of the construction of teaching staff, it was also necessary to strengthen the communication and contact between the academic circles and the industry.

In the forum, Professor Yang Baojun, Professor Zhou Weihua and other teachers discussed with experts about the relationship between the industry and the academic circle, how journalism education adapts to the times, and the interdisciplinary perspective of journalism and communication. Student representatives communicated with experts based on their doubts and thoughts in the study of journalism and communication.

After a comprehensive investigation, the evaluation experts agreed that the School of Journalism and Communication of Renmin University of China had always attached great importance to the construction of degree conferring institutions of journalism and communication discipline, with strong teaching staff, solid foundation for running schools, sound management system, clear orientation and objectives for postgraduate training. Furthermore, during the process of running the school, the School actively reformed the training mechanism, broadened the training mode, and improved the quality of training. In addition, it adapted to the changes of the times, consolidated the traditional advantages of basic theory, and broadened the boundaries of disciplines at the same time. It held a clear discipline development plan and top-level design. All in all, the School of Journalism and Communication of Renmin University of China had made excellent achievements in the construction of degree conferring institutions and passed the evaluation.

At the same time, the expert group raised the problems existing in the degree conferring institutions of journalism and communication discipline of Renmin University of China. It was suggested that it should further improve and enlarge the teaching staff, enhance the reserve force of teachers and the internationalization of the School. And it should also introduce and cultivate teachers with strong practical teaching ability by means of the joint construction with the ministry in Beijing and further strengthen the differentiation of professional master and academic master, comprehensively strengthen the professional construction of professional master curriculum system according to practical needs.
